Her Majesty’s Prison Barlinnie in Glasgow is one of the oldest functioning prisons in the world and one of the most infamous. Feared by generations of convicts as the ‘toughest prison in Britain’, ten men have gone to the gallows behind these stone walls, including the serial killer Peter Manuel. However, Barlinnie is now coming to the end of 150 years of hard time.
A relic of the Victorian era, the prison has been sentenced to close all cell doors by 2020, but first the governor, prison staff and prisoners are inviting Ross Kemp and our cameras into the jail for a week to produce a unique documentary that examines the dark history of this iconic jail and reveals what life is like for prisoners who are currently locked-up in Barlinnie.
